Learn How To Shuffle

Learn How To Shuffle

Interested in learning how to shuffle? I still remember attending my first house music shows and looking around wondering what this style of dance was that people were throwing out left and right all around me. They made it look so seamless and easy. They were moving like crazy, bouncing between the beat but didn’t look off kilter at all. These shufflers had a way of making it look simple yet crazy all while the music was making me bounce along with the beat.

As I began to wonder how to perform these moves I decided to jump to it and ask a professional. Well, he wasn’t exactly a professional. More or less he was just a rave kid who had been to entirely too many shows as he was more than obliged to show me every move in the book. The one I asked him to focus on in particular was just your basic shuffle.

Below I’ve listed some of the best videos I’ve found that teach you in-depth how to shuffle correctly. Shuffling is all about keeping the beat and making it look easy. It doesn’t matter how good you are at moving, if you’re not moving to the particular song that’s playing and hitting the beat correctly then you’re just going to look like you have turrets and can’t keep yourself from bouncing all over the place. Don’t get stuck in the 80′s, practice in front of a mirror a few times to get it down, then take it to your next show where you can get some real action. Others will be more than happy to help you master it as well.

The first video here is a tutorial on shuffling which includes the shuffle, running man, and how to transition.

This video is a really long and 2 part video showing you the whole break down of the choreographed section of the Party Rock Video. It’s pretty awesome and you can definitely take some of the moves with you the next time your improvising a shuffle sesh.

PLUR

PLUR

PLUR stands for the main four pillars of the rave scene. Most people think of electronic music, drugs, and light shows when they think of raves or house music festivals. But there is actually much more to it than what is seen on the surface. PLUR literally stands for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. All of which are important to enjoying each and every event you attend.

The idea is that all of these are tied to together in such a way that you can’t have one without the others existing as well. They aren’t just given to you by any means simply because you show up at a rave and pop a pill or take something. You have to be open to it and understand that as you give each of these, you will receive them in return. Whether you are looking for it or not, it’s there. And part of enjoying each and every show is knowing that PLUR exists.

Peace is about not creating violence especially in such a place where it’s easy to become irate and generally just pissed off. People will be spilling drinks, the music might not be what you expected, and people will more than likely bump into you a few times. The key is to not let it get to you. This isn’t just to enjoy the show, but to also keep yourself safe. There are some really messed up people in the world. Don’t take the chance that the guy you decide to pick a fight with is one of them. For all you know he can have twice as many friends as you and can be hiding a weapon. Let things pass and understand that accidents happen, deal with it and enjoy the DJ.

Love is about appreciating everything around you. The people, the music, the environment all can be appreciated if you just chill out and keep the peace. Raves and festivals are put together for maximum enjoyment. Everything from the light shows to sound system are brought together for one thing, to have an amazing time. Relax and it will happen.

Unity naturally follows both peace and love. You can get along with others and in turn they help you to enjoy this coming together of people and music known as a rave. You don’t need to walk around greeting every single person you see. It simply means that you understand that you are not the only one enjoying this show. People come from all walks of life and somehow enjoy the same places and sounds. Music can bring people together in strange ways, being aware that it has this ability to do so is what’s important.

Respect is what ties everything together. Having respect for Peace, Love, and Unity. It’s about respecting those around you and those who have taken the time to throw the rave for you to enjoy. You may not always like the music playing or the temperature outside, but there are others who might be loving every minute of it. Someone once mentioned that we are oftentimes too worried about being disrespected than to realize that we are not respecting others. No one respects someone else unless they are being given respect in turn.

Now that you understand the four main pillars of the electronic dance scene, or raves, perhaps you can bring this mentality to your next show. PLUR is important to those who truly enjoy every show, and there’s no doubt that you enjoy it yourself.

Rave Clothing

Rave Clothing

EDC 2011 is right around the corner. I for one am excited about the costumes, light shows, and crazy dancing characters that will be surrounding us all as we enjoy some of the greatest music the world has to offer. One of the best features about rave clothing is the show that each person brings with them as they dress not to impress anyone but to instead escape the normalcy of their everyday lives. Sporting everything from colorful shirts to tutus and props, everything you see is completely out of the ordinary.

Women often wear a low-cut top or classy bra with a mini skirt and some high leggings. This is perhaps for the more daring, but many simply throw on bright colored top and some accessories. From pink, to sky blue, to orange, they wear any color that makes them stand out from the crowd. Their hair might have colorful extensions and they usually have some light-up props with them as well. Think glow sticks and glow-in-the-dark bracelets. While many girls wear high-heels, others opt for something more comfortable such as colorful chucks. The important thing to remember about all footwear is to try and protect your feet. Raves are known for their energy and dancing which often leads to a lot jumping and foot to foot contact. If you wear anything open-toed then you are likely to leave with cuts and bruises.

Rave Music and LightsGuys should be aware that whatever shirt you wear to the rave or festival will most-likely end up being removed by the end. There’s such a high-level of dancing and heat created by the large number of people, you are likely to want to take off your shirt by the end of the rave. If you live in a cooler part of the world then you can expect to not need a jacket or long sleeves. Colorful t-shirts and tank tops work perfectly with shorts, loose pants, or board shorts. Personally I like to come wearing something I’ll be comfortable in all night but with layers that I can shed if I get too hot or smothered by the crowd.

Rave pants or fat pants are still extremely popular at raves, although they seem to be a dying trend. They are pants that have extremely wide legs and are decorated with a multitude of pockets down the sides. Fat pants have enough room to dance comfortably in, but also have lots of pockets to carry any props or goodies you may bring with you.

However you choose to dress at a rave, remember that expression can be fun and exciting! Whatever rave clothing you sport at your next event check out the selection at eraveclothes.com. They put together the best accessories for guys and girls that you can find. And if you’re looking for something in particular they’ll be sure to help you find it just by using the contact page.

Rave Gloves – Intro to Gloving

Rave Gloves – Intro to Gloving

It’s only recently that raves and festivals have become what we know them as today.  The term “rave” was the only first used in the 1970s to describe the types of parties in which people listened to fast-paced electronic music in large groups primarily for dancing.  It obviously started as an underground movement during the disco era and has built momentum to become what we know it has today.  Graves have become so popular that it is not uncommon to see array of sellout with more than 100,000 attendees.  This could be because the type of music that is popular at rays and festivals is no longer just an underground movement.  Depending upon where you live in the world festivals have different themes, costumes, and even art forms.  One of these art forms that is common on the West Coast in the United States is gloving.

It was only about eight years ago that people began using glow sticks in their hands to move them around along with the music in order to create visual stimulation.  Because most raves take place at night the glow sticks would create colorful streams in such a way that it would almost seem as though the audience was hallucinating.  Years later “glovers” are using LED’s in the fingertips of soft glow of to create in even greater affect then was possible in the past.  The art has evolved into a hobby for many youngsters who can do things with their hands that you may have never thought possible.  Not long ago glovers used to charge for their shows and could make a decent profit at festivals.  However, nowadays the mindset is more of a sharing is caring feeling.  Light shows are given for free to a very willing audience.

To those who have never attended a festival and seen a true light show in the proper setting, gloving is just a silly hobby and looks as though it is only enjoyable for those who are heavily intoxicated.  Yet, truly talented glovers know that it is an art which can be used to not only express oneself but can also make an incredibly fun experience even more enjoyable.  Anyone who has received a light show knows that a lot of work goes into creating something so magnificent and will likely never forget the experience.

Great rave gloves are the key to giving a good set, just ask any experienced glover and they’ll be the first to tell you that it takes practice and some quality gloves. Also be sure to check out all of our rave clothes and props for festivals, you need to find a few things in here.

Raves and Festivals

Raves and Festivals

A rave (or festival) is a gathering of musical DJ’s or artists consisting of usually hundreds or even thousands of individuals which most often takes place at night.  These raves are popular in many parts of the world including Belgium, Ibiza, Miami, Brazil, and Los Angeles. Raves haven’t always been conducted in the same way they do now though. Over the years they have grown from being primarily illegal events without any real corporate affiliation.

Raves as we know them today began in the 1980’s.  Most raves used to be held in abandoned warehouses and were illegally held without any city ordinance or zone specification. They were usually spontaneous and underground without nearly as much planning as they require today.

Most raves are held around electronic music while some combine a variety of genres. Artists will perform back to back for several hours on end and usually continue into the night. People of all ages attend raves, they are not constrained to only adults. Some see this as a problem since raves in the past have been rampant with drug use. However, not everyone who attends raves are subjected to exposure to drug use. In fact transporting drugs into a rave is illegal in most countries and is grounds for arrest.

Nowadays raves are held in large stadiums, fairgrounds or parks and have been known to have hundreds of thousands of attendees. They are put on by large organizations who hire contractors for jobs like security, serving food, and stage construction. Oftentimes they hire entertainment companies to perform while the main focus of the rave is performing, the DJ.

Today raves are taking place in larger proportions than they ever have. As the electronic music scene continues to become more popular and hit mainstream, raves will likely see more attendance than they ever have in the past.

How to Box for Glovers

How to Box for Glovers

First of all just want to say that you can pick up great gloving gear including lights, LEDs, and glove sets in our Lights & Gloves section.

Just wanted to put together a tutorial for glovers about some tips and tricks on how to do a box set. The first and most obvious point is to keep it boxy. Yea seriously. In order to do that you need to work on your hand angles. Primarily you need to get your back bend to be a right angle. The front bend of the hand is simple to master with a bit of practice in front of a mirror. But the back bend is by far more difficult.

The key to putting on a good box set is to get the angles flat. The hand needs to be horizontal. You do this by working out the angle in your hand. What I mean by this is take your hand back, then using your opposite hand to press down on the angle hand. You should feel a bit of a pull and it is going to be a bit uncomfortable at first. However, you should feel the stretch in the wrist and forearm. After doing this for a few days you’ll notice it gets looser over time. Use the stretch to work on the getting the hand flat and your angles to be boxy.

If you aren’t ready for box sets yet, start with your forward angles and do what you can using the skills you already got. You can practice and work on box sets using mostly forward angles and still put on a good set. Make sure you are always moving it around and sliding the your boxes. Work on your tilts as well in the mean time. The stretching and pulling exercises you’ll be doing will get your hands ready to do a full box set.

Remember to be creative. There are a lot varieties of boxing and if you think “outside of the box” you’ll master box sets. Boxes are everywhere..
